Access to e-mail is no problem. At the hotel there is a business service. In the small town of Sosua there are several internet cafes. Many team members have logged on after the evening meal before walking back to the hotel.
If you are staying at the Crossroads Retreat center, you are a little more removed from easy access. Just ask the staff when and from where you can send e-mail. Arrangements can be made on certain evenings for the whole team to have access at one of the internet cafes in town.
For telephone access, phones are available in the hotel right in your room. However you will find it could cost as much as $1 per minute to phone home. Also there are call centers in town that are much less expensive. Local cell phones are available at the Crossroads retreat center, and calling cards can be purchased for calls to the US.
