Dominican Republic: Culture

Home Visits

One of the most memorable experiences in Ascension Village is the chance to visit with a family in their home. Sometimes if you meet a special friend during our work days, you will be invited to come visit...maybe even for a meal. There is no better way to learn a culture than this! Bring some rice, bread, meat, or even a coke, and be ready to smile! This is only for those with an adventuresome spirit, and the knowledge your stomach may later pay a price for this rich relationship!

Baseball

Dive into a baseball game with the kids! Ever since an American presence in this nation many decades ago, the game has been lifted into the spotlight of being a national pastime. SAMMY SOSA, one of the "greats" of American baseball, comes from the Dominican Republic, and even uses his earnings to aid the poor of his nation. Some team members have brought baseballs and gloves with them to give to the children in the neighborhood.

Gua Gua Transport System

Another "cultural experience" is a trip on these microbuses...micro as in NO SPACE! Not many team members have ventured out in this way, and it is recommended to go with a Sharing staff member if you do. Again this is for those with a thirst for adventure...and a little discomfort!
