Dominican Republic Site Seeing: Market
Sosua Street Market
On the way to the beach, the walking street is loaded with shops full of colorful local crafts and souvenirs. From oil paintings to woodcarvings and clothing, shopkeepers have somehow filled every corner with something to catch your eye. The challenge is learning to say, "how much," without paying the first price quoted! Even more challenging is leaving a store where the owner is convinced you shouldn't leave until you buy SOMETHING!
The National School of the Arts, founded in 1942, is largely responsible for the country’s fine painting tradition. “Primitive” art which relies less on perspective and shading and more on color and action, is also popular. It is easy to give in to the vendors when so many unique creations of art display the unique aspects of Dominican life.
Playa Dorado Shopping Mall
Lined up along the main boulevard is a huge tourist resort. There are about a dozen all-inclusive hotels, gift shops, even a movie cinema. Some teams stop in for a break from the developing world environment, but it doesn’t take long to desire to be back with our friends who have so little!
This tourist area shopping center has been able to eliminate all local ambience from the traditional outdoor markets! Intended for tourist "mall shoppers," teams have found these stores to be a good break from the heat...and with a selection of items that are unique to the area. From trendy jewelry to other items special (if not inexpensive) to the area, it is of interest at least for a time. Usually folks are ready to leave this tourist haven for the "real Dominican Republic" after a short visit.
Tour de Isabel
If your team spends an afternoon visiting the top of the mountain, you will notice a group of "tiendas" located just under the huge sculpture of Jesus! The stores inside carry a variety of local items, including jewelry featuring the stone called Lorimar. This stone is found mainly in the Dominican Republic, and is a great souvenir at an affordable price...that is if you learn to negotiate a bit with the shop owners!
