Liberia Country Information: Climate
Seasons
Liberia is located in a moderate tropical zone. This means that the nation receives rain throughout the year. The wet season lasts for six months, April to October. The climate is excellent for agriculture. It is very lush and humid. It rains often with even the dry season receiving evening showers. Temperatures range from 70’s to 90’s most times of the year.
Agriculture
The tropical climate means good potential for people to grow their own food. This offers some hope from the suffering that nearly every Liberian has been through. At least there is opportunity for cultivation of produce, and indeed this has begun on a small scale with families working to provide some sustenance in an economy where food is not yet readily available in large supply for affordable prices. One item we bring in is seed to promote more self-sustaining communities.
Preparation
As you prepare to travel to Liberia, there are several things to keep in mind with regard to the climate. Lightweight cottons work best in the heat, while synthetic fabrics like polyester tend to be very hot. You may need a light jacket during some evenings. Don't forget a hat for those sunny days!
Men should wear long trousers, not shorts. This protects against sunburn in the day and from bites from malaria-carrying mosquitos at night. Also in African society, usually only younger boys wear shorts. When we work with local people we “connect” with everyone more readily when observing some cultural norms such as this one. However this recommendation is up to you at the work site, or during time off with the team. It becomes important in public settings such as church services or meetings with local officials. To sum it up, long trousers for men are both a climate and a relational consideration.
Ladies should bring cotton dresses and skirts that are not necessarily “dressy,” but that can be worn while among the locals. Capris and light weight modest clothing are totally appropriate. Conservative dress is appropriate in this society. Tops that cover the shoulders and long loose fitting skirts or below-the-knee slacks are right for the work site. Remember that evening hours bring out the mosquitos. You can protect yourself from the potential of disease by covering ankles and arms.
